New analysis suggests more than 700,000 graduates are currently out of work and claiming benefits — a figure that has risen sharply since 2019. Behind this headline are real people: graduates who can’t secure interviews, young people managing health conditions, and individuals who were promised that a degree alone would “open doors”.
But the picture is more complex than a single statistic.
What the official data shows — and what it doesn’t
According to the Department for Education’s Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2024, 87.6% of working‑age graduates were in employment in 2024, compared with 68% of non‑graduates. Postgraduates fare even better at 90%.
On paper, this looks reassuring. But the same dataset highlights deeper issues:
Only 67.9% of graduates are in high‑skilled roles, compared with 79% of postgraduates.
Graduate unemployment sits at 3.1%, but inactivity (not working and not seeking work) remains at 9.6% — the lowest on record, but still significant.
Disabled graduates face far worse outcomes, with inactivity rates of 19.7%, more than double their non‑disabled peers.

And that’s before we consider the 700,000 graduates claiming benefits, or the 240,000 who say they cannot work due to health reasons — numbers that sit outside the DfE dataset but reflect the lived reality of many young people.
